Fiji bus fares go up after fuel hike

7:02 am on 6 May 2005

Fiji's Land Transport Authority has announced a 4.5 percent increase in bus fares throughout the country.

The increase is before the addition of the government's 12.5 percent Value Added Tax and comes into effect from May the 16th.

The 4.5 percent increase is about half of what the bus operators had sought and has been attributed to increasing fuel prices.

In March, the Reserve Bank of Fiji had warned of much higher inflation than the 3.8 percent it forecast for this year, if bus and taxi fares were to be increased.
