Coup victims deserve justice, not perpetrators, says Fiji party

The new National Alliance Party of Fiji says the victims of the Speight coup deserve justice, not its perpetrators.

The Fiji Sun quotes the party president and former chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, as saying it wouldn't be restorative justice, to pardon the perpetrators of the coup.

Ratu Epeli says the victims of the coup are the ones deserving justice.

He says Fiji is sinking deeper into uncertainty by the continuing manipulation and exploitation of indigenous culture by a government desperate to stay in power.

Ratu Epeli says the latest example of clutching at straws is the proposed Reconciliation and Unity Commission.

He says the National Alliance Party is totally against the legislation and has urged all parliamentarians to vote against it.

Ratu Epeli says there's no need to bring in new legislation as existing laws allow compensation to be paid to victims of the coup.
