The Papua New Guinea to Australia pipeline, which will see the export of natural gas from the PNG highlands, has moved into the next phase of its development.

The AGL-Petronas Consortium has awarded the engineering contract for the design of the pipeline, to international firm, GHD.

In addition to GHD's engineering role, this US$19 million phase will also undertake environmental and financial viability assessments.

The AGL managing director, Greg Martin, said a final investment decision will be taken once this stage is completed.

The PNG Gas Project participants are targeting initial gas deliveries to customers from 2009.
