Formerly banned New Zealand journalist won't change how he reports in Tonga

New Zealand journalist Mike Field says he will not change his approach to reporting after the Tongan government lifted a ban on him entering the country.

Mr Field has been banned since 1996.

Last week the Immigration Minister, Tu'a Taumoepeau Tupou, announced that the ban would be lifted.

This comes after the Pacific Island News Association, the Samoa Observer and Tonga's Media Council called for the ban to be quashed so Mr Field can attend a conference in October.

Mike Field says he welcomes the decision but he won't be changing the way he reports.

"My approach is always been to get as much information from both sides of the story as I can. It has only been the Tongan government itself. I have a vast file of unanswered letters and questions that I ritually have given to government officials over the years."
