Germany lifts ban on import of kava

8:22 am on 17 May 2005

Fiji producers have welcomed news that Germany has lifted a ban on the import of kava from the South Pacific.

The chairman of the Fiji Kava Council, Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo, says there is an urgent need for Fiji and other South Pacific growers to fast track production capacity and regulate the industry to meet international standards.

But the managing director of HERB Reseach in Germany, Dr Mathias Schmidt, is quoted as saying although the ban has been lifted, there is still a long way to go to get kava back on the market.
