Hungry Reef Islanders in Solomon Islands told to be patient

4:29 pm on 20 May 2005

People suffering reported food shortages in the far east of Solomon Islands are being urged to wait for aid supplies.

Six-thousand Reef Islanders are said to have little to eat, but for the last three weeks no aid has been sent to ease their plight.

The Red Cross and the Temotu provincial government have assessed the situation and provided reports to the Home Affairs department which have been raised in Cabinet.

The disaster council director, Loti Yates, says they're bound to follow the laws.

"We know that people are out there complaining that they are hungry etcetera, and the best we can do is to, to be patient, and as soon as whatever is given to us is there, we will go ahead and proceed."

Mr Yates says he's awaiting a positive response from the government.
