Stand-off in Wallis continues

6:45 pm on 23 May 2005

There are still conflicting reports from Wallis and Futuna about the fate of the 86-year-old Wallis king, Tomasi Kulimoetoke.

Some royal families say he has been toppled while others say his authority is intact.

No tangible outcome has yet been reached in the open confrontation between the clans.

Since last week, local French authorities have moved to cut the king's and his council of ministers' official sitting allowances.

The king has given refuge to his grandson who had been sentenced to jail for causing a fatal car accident while driving drunk.

Reports say the king claims that there has been a customary pardon and settlement over the death.
