A recent trip to study Vailulu'u Volcano, east of American Samoa's Ta'u Island has discovered a new active volcano which scientists believe will eventually become the next island in the Samoa Chain.

The new volcano, named Nafanua after the Samoan goddess of war, did not exist just four years ago.

Scientists say Nafanua is growing at the rate of about 20 centimetres a day and is already 300 metres or nearly a thousand feet high.
