Fiji parliament to look at reconciliation bill next week

4:11 pm on 27 May 2005

The Fiji government will go ahead with the tabling of its Reconciliation and Unity Bill in parliament next Tuesday despite fierce opposition.

The Fiji Times reports that this has been decided by parliament's business committee which is chaired by the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase.

The secretary general to parliament, Mary Chapman, has confirmed that the Bill would be given its first reading on Tuesday before the prime minister speaks on it on Wednesday.

She says after that the Bill would be referred to parliament's Justice, Law and Order Committee which seeks public opinion on legislation before the House.

Ms Chapman says the committee does not at present have a chairman because the post was previously held by the former deputy speaker, Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure.

Vakalalabure, a lawyer who is barred from practice for life, is serving a 6-year jail sentence for taking an illegal oath to become the purported attorney general in Speight's failed administration during the coup.
