American Samoa Congressman asks McDonalds to relocate planned restaurant

8:13 am on 28 May 2005

American Samoa's Congressman says it has been necessary for him to make McDonalds aware of the community opposition to McDonalds American Samoa's plan to build a restaurant on Utulei beach.

Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin has written to the owner of the local McDonalds Representative Agaoleatu Charlie Tautolo asking that he reconsiders.

The congressman warns that if the controversy is not resolved, he will go on the US House floor daily to oppose the construction of the golden arches on Utulei Beach.

"The public has expressedly viewed their opposition to this proposal. The committee does not object to McDonalds building another facility. It is where they're trying to build it is where the opposition is coming from. And I'm going to do my darnest to let the corporate leaders of McDonalds know... find another place, and by the way we've already allocated federal funding in developing that whole beach area as a recreational place."
