Solomon Islands builds accommodation for youth criminals

10:20 am on 31 May 2005

The Solomon Islands prisons commissioner, Philip Norris, says the capital's main prison will have a new unit for youth criminals.

Commissioner Norris has told the Solomon Star that the Rove Central Prison will have a juvenile facility within a year.

The Public Solicitor, Ken Averre, has raised concerns about the lack of juvenile facilities.

Mr Norris says the single juvenile in the prison is on remand awaiting trial on a murder charge, and he says he's satisfied that the youth is being looked after.

Commissioner Norris says improvements over the last 18 months have given prisoners better access to health care.
