Taiwan is to announce an ambassador to Nauru after this week's formal end of diplomatic ties between China and Nauru.

This comes just over two weeks after Nauru ended its three-year period of only giving diplomatic recognition to Beijing.

Last month, Nauru's president, Ludwig Scotty was in Taipei where he announced the policy shift to recognise Taiwan again.

This week, China cut ties with Nauru.

A month ago, Mr Scotty met Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-bian, in Kiribati where Mr Chen was on his second Pacific trip this year.
