Samoa government budget grants big pay rises to public servants

Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele has presented the coming year's Budget in Parliament on behalf of Finance Minister Misa Telefoni, who is undergoing medical treatment in New Zealand.

Totalling over 164 million US dollars, the budget features pay increases of 30 percent for senior public servants as well as the Head of State, and Members of Parliament.

Also included is a 42 percent pay increase for other public servants and an increase in the hourly rate for minimum wage earners.

The budget also includes a 25 percent increase for pensioners, from 37 US dollars a month to 46 dollars.

These will go into effect on July the 1st.

Other features of the budget include 10 million US dollars in contribution to the start-up costs for the joint venture, merging Polynesian Airlines and Australia's Virgin Blue under Polynesian Blue.
