Solomon Islands trade union council notifies PM of strike action

7:14 am on 3 June 2005

The Solomon Islands Council of Trade Unions has issued a 28-day strike notice to the Prime Minister.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports the trade union council's national secretary Tony Kagovai, as saying the strike notice is in support of a number of union meeting resolutions.

The resolutions call on the Prime Minister to establish a commission of enquiry into the management, investment, loans and operations of the National Provident Fund.

The union is asking to be able to appoint workers representatives to that commission of enquiry.

Mr Kagovai says the Prime Minister's office has been given a month's notice, effective from the 31st of May.

He says it's been copied to the Permanent Secretary for Trade Commerce and Employment as well as the commissioner of Labour.
