Fiji PM apologises over perceived snub of military

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has apologised to the military and the soldiers who came back from East Timor if the impression created was that he snubbed them.

Mr Qarase has told Radio Legend that snubbing anyone was never his intention.

Mr Qarase said a simple matter has been blown out of proportion due to a communication breakdown.

He said officials at the welcoming parade for peacekeepers on Friday were informed that he would leave early because of other commitments.

Mr Qarase said his programme was made out for him and he was to leave at the time suggested because he had commitments in the west and did not even have time to go to parliament.

Mr Qarase said the differences between the government and the military are causing concern and the minister for home affairs is looking into the matter
