The New Zealand foreign minister, Phil Goff, has confirmed that New Zealand has offered to fund the position of deputy commissioner in the Solomon Islands police force.

The position is currently funded by Australia which also provides the police commissioner in Honiara.

Mr Goff says no date has been set for when the offer may be taken up.

"I think that would be welcomed not only by Solomon Islanders of course who enjoy the presence of the New Zealand police contingent there but also by the Australians that would want to see some of the responsibilities for ensuring the progress of RAMSI mission shared between countries rather than simply having a predominant Australian presence."
