Norfolk goes green - considers recycling glass as building sand

9:20 pm on 14 June 2005

Norfolk Island hopes to improve its environment with the introduction of a green waste management system.

Australia's Natual Heritage Trust has approved funds of around half a million US dollars to deal with green waste, and plans include the purchase of a giant mulcher to turn the plant matter into compost.

It's also hoped that some builders waste can be ground up so that it is no longer burnt and the ash dumped into the sea.

The manager of Land Use and Environment in the Norfolk Island administration, Fred Howe says another waste product they would like to recycle is glass:

"We generate probably five hundred tonnes of glass a year and a glass crusher is high on our list of priorities to get, as sand is a very, very limited commodity on Norfolk Island, strangely enough, and the building industry here needs sand so we have to look at ways to supplement that and a glass crusher is something that will churn all that glass that we otherwise chuck into the ocean into a useable product."
