A court in New Caledonia has sentenced three young men to a one-year jail sentence for a weekend assault on elderly people.

The victims, in their 60s and 70s, were assaulted in broad daylight at a bus stop in the centre of the town of Paita.

The local newspaper, Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes, says the three had no other explanation for their action other than to say that they had been under the influence of alcohol.
