Air Pacific open to offer New Zealand to Niue flights

Fiji's national carrier, Air Pacific, says it is willing to consider a direct service between Auckland and Niue.

Niue is struggling to ensure that flights will continue once the current carrier to Niue, Polynesian Airlines, merges with Virgin Blue.

New Zealand's aid agency NZAID, which underwrites the service, has been holding talks with other airlines, including Air New Zealand, about taking over the route, if the new airline, to be called Polynesian Blue, drops it.

The managing director of Air Pacific, John Campbell, says Air Pacific has not been in contact with either the New Zealand or Niue government, but the airline is sympathetic to the plight faced by the island.

"'We have the expertise, we have the equipment to be able to fill that gap, but we would need to examine how best we could make it work before we approached either of the governments."
