Marshall Islands capital faces water restrictions

7:11 am on 20 June 2005

After an unusually dry May and June in he Marshall Islands, the capital is now facing water shortages.

The Majuro Water and Sewer Company has announced that water will only be on two days per week, instead of the normal three.

Majuro has a population of about 25,000 and supplies have dwindled to 10-day supply of normal usage.

About 90 percent of Majuro's fresh water comes from rain, with the balance from ground water lens wells.

Most people in the capital have catchment tanks that they fill either from rain or from city water when it's on.
