American Samoa Governor calls for government restructure

10:28 am on 21 June 2005

American Samoa's Governor, Togiola Tulafono has appointed a Task force chaired by the Lt. Governor to look at restructuring the government.

The governor announced on his weekend radio programme that the government had grown too large with so many departments and directors and it was time to streamline departments and consolidate those with similar functions and responsibilities.

The governor cited as an example, that both the environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Commerce had environmental responsibilities.

He said perhaps it was time to bring these functions under one department and avoid duplication, competition and the public going from one agency to another for the same type of service.
