Power being restored on French Polynesia's Rurutu island

3:32 pm on 22 June 2005

Electricity supplies are being restored on the French Polynesian island of Rurutu after a fire destroyed the island's power station.

Three generators were destroyed in the weekend blaze which may have been the result of recent violent electric storms.

The Tahitipresse news agency says all power was lost but firefighters managed to control the fire and one generator was spared.

They also prevented the fire from burning the fuel supply.

A military plane from Tahiti has brought help and some power has been restored.
