Environment Minister at pro-whale helm: Solomons report

3:29 pm on 23 June 2005

Reports in Solomon Islands suggest the Environment Minister was heading a delegation in South Korea which voted for the resumption of commercial whaling after the Government pleged to abstain.

The Prime Minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, has told local radio that if David Holosivi deliberately voted against the Government's wishes, he could be disciplined.

Yesterday, Sir Allan yesterday indicated it was the Fisheries Minister, Paul Meanu'u, who made the decision in South Korea..

The Australian Government says it wants Solomon Islands to explain the surprise move to back Japan, which failed to get the necessary majority at the International Whaling Commission meeting to end the moratorium.
