Solomons government asks unions for more time to resolve issues

7:03 am on 27 June 2005

The Solomons government has asked the Council of Trade Unions to extend a strike action deadline by two weeks.

The Council issued a strike action notice against the government on various issues relating to the operations of the Solomon Islands National Provident Fund.

The Solomons Broadcasting Corporation says strike action could be held from tomorrow.

But in a letter to the Council, the Principal Policy Advisor in the department of Public Service, David Tuhanuku, has asked for the government to have more time to start the process of dealing with the grievances.

The government has directed the public service department to address the issues which the Council of Trade Unions raised in its strike notice.

The Trade Unions Council Executive is due to discuss the letters from both the Public Service department and the Prime Minister later today.
