Fiji Law Society president requests meeting with Attorney General

2:16 pm on 4 July 2005

The president of the Fiji Law Society is hoping to meet the Attorney General this week to discuss the government's controversial Reconciliation and Unity bill.

Graham Leung was speaking after he'd announced that the Law Society would mount a legal challenge to the bill if it became law.

He says they will contest the bill's amnesty provisions which would allow an amnesty commission to free coup convicts if they were convinced that they'd been acting out of political conviction not criminal intent.

Mr Leung says this undermines the courts and is unacceptable but he's hoping the bill can be amended before it's presented again to parliament.

"I'm hoping I can sit down with the Attorney General some time this week, and ask him what the story is and just basically see how far apart we are, and if there are gaps that are bridgeable, you know, we'd be happy to see how we could work with them in an advisory capacity."

Mr Leung says the government needs to strike out the amnesty provisions from the bill if it wants to avoid court action.
