Air NZ sees improvement in New Caledonia's tourist industry

The General Manager of Pacific Sales for Air New Zealand Roger Poulton says the signs are good for a resurrection of tourism in New Caledonia.

Air New Zealand has just announced a new connection linking Noumea to Paris via Auckland and San Fransisco.

The move is part of a push by the airline to encourage more New Zealand tourists to travel to New Caledonia.

Mr Poulton has just returned from the territory where he took a look at its potential as a tourist destination.

He says that New Caledonia suffered a drop off in tourist numbers after the successful Club Med era of the 1980s, but that the potential to do well again is evident...

"We certainly will be anticpating working more closely with New Caledonian Tourism which is the government body that promotes tourism. It is certainly wanting to do more promotion of New Caledonia here in New Zealand. It's a very nice little spot, so we are very keen to get it moving again, and we thnk the facilities up there now are excellent, the quality of hotels, restaurants and so on."
