Report findings force Cook Islands secretary to resign

10:14 am on 6 July 2005

The public service commissioner in the Cook Islands has confirmed the resignation of Manihiki Island's secretary Toroma Solomona.

Joe Caffery says Mr Solomona handed in his resignation on June the 20th after an audit of uncompleted capital projects and administration on Manahiki found problems with contractual obligations and financial reporting during Mr Solomona's term as secretary.

Mr Caffery says in accordance with the Public Service Commission Act, cabinet will now have to endorse Solomona's resignation and nominate an acting island secretary until the position is filled.

The report says the audit office was informed by PSC that the former island secretary's appointment had been a political one rather than an appointment based on skills, qualification and merit.
