French Polynesian leaders quibble over July 4th

2:07 pm on 7 July 2005

The French Polynesian opposition has denounced a decision by President Oscar Temaru to commemorate every year the American National Day on July the 4th.

The Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party has issued a statement, saying soon Mr Temaru may be also organising events to mark New Zealand's and Australia's national days.

The party says he is pursuit of independence from France, describing it as his obsession.

The Tahoeraa has been calling for a referendum on the matter but Mr Temaru has repeatedly said this is not on the agenda.

Mr Temaru says the plan to celebrate the American National Day was drawn up by the previous government led by the Tahoeraa leader, Gaston Flosse.

The Tahoeraa party also says Mr Temaru has confirmed that there will be no celebration on July the 14th which is the French National Day while a reception was held at the presidential compound to mark July the 4th.
