2:18 pm on 7 July 2005

Solomon Islands celebrates 27 years of independence from British rule today.

Celebrations take place in the national capital Honiara and in the provincial capitals.

In his independence day message, the Prime Minister, Sir Allen Kemakeza, says the country must reflect on the past and work towards a brighter future.

Sir Allen says since he took office in 2001, his government has worked diligently to return Solomon Islands to normalcy and on the path to sustainable peace and development after years of social unrest.

He says with the help of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, the country has achieved peace, adding that it's vital to capitalise on the opportunity.

Sir Allen says as his administration approaches the end of its term in office, he commends government partners, NGOs including churches, the private sector and the people for their support and co-operation in the search for peace and progress.
