Two members of the French National Assembly have put forward a bill aimed at making easier it for victims of nuclear accidents and weapons tests to get compensation.

Paul Giacobbi and Christine Taubira have issued a joint statement, saying they asked the Socialist Party to help make it easier to link the effects of the tests to a range of health problems.

The two say there have been 200 French atomic tests between 1960 and 1996, most of them in French Polynesia.

An estimated 400 people have lodged complaints against the French state.
