The American Samoan Government says the territory has one of the fastest growing populations in the Pacific.

It has estimated the population at July 1st at 65,500.

This is more than 8,000 above the figure recorded in the census of 2000.

The Commerce Department says the population has been growing steadily by an average of about 1,600 persons each year, since the census.

It says this is due solely to natural increase.

The territory has not produced any figures on migration for the past three years.
