Samoa's Prime Minister has announced the end of October as the official starting date of the new airline, Polynesian Blue.

The new airline is a joint venture between the government owned Polynesian Airlines and Australian's low cost carrier Virgin Blue.

Polynesian Blue will provide flights from Samoa to Australia and New Zealand.

Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi said that Virgin was chosen over Air New Zealand and Qantas for its cheap airfares and award winning service.

The Samoa government and Virgin each have a 49-percent stake in Polynesian Blue, with the remaining 2-percent owned by an independent Samoan shareholder.

Polynesian Blue will be operated by its New Zealand-based subsidiary Pacific Blue.
