A strike by international cabin crews at Air New Zealand is causing major inconvenience to travellers on tight schedules.

Around 15 thousand passengers are effected by the action which involves six days of strikes between now and next Monday and has led to the cancellation of 85 flights.

Passengers are being asked to wait for later flights or those leaving the following day on alternative airlines causing disruption for one west Australian tourist and his partner who were hoping to fly to Hawaii.

"It's a long way to fly to be cut short. We were going to be there for two weeks, now we will be there for less than two weeks depending on what happens. It's a bit of a tragedy really when we have been saving up for a year and they stuff you around like this."

The Australian couple were among those who only found out about the strike today, however Air New Zealand says it's managed to inform the majority of passengers of the cancellations prior to their arrival at the airport.
