Vanuatu National Council of Women wants beauty contest scrapped

Vanuatu's National Council of Women is calling for the annual beauty contest to be scrapped.

The Council of Women believes the beauty queen event degrades women.

The council's Chief executive officer Jenny Ligo says just because many other countries have a beauty show, it doesn't mean that it is in the best interests of Vanuatu women to follow suit.

Instead, the council is proposing another event, that will benefit the community by raising money for charity.

"We would like to see a charity queen. And this has happened before. The women think that's something but not a beauty contest."
