An indigenous Fijian landowner has decided to turn former cane field land into a mini city near Nadi International Airport.

The Fiji Times reports that Ratu Rayasi Nalukuya is building Westfield City comprising residential lots, commercial developments and a motel site.

Ratu Rayasi says over the years, his clan has acquired over 2,000 hectares of land near Nadi Airport and decided to convert some of it into commercial property.

The president of the Fiji Chamber of Commerce, Taito Waradi, says land is a gold mine for indigenous Fijian people.

Mr Waradi says with the sugar industry unstable, landowners should venture out and initiate other developments.
