Fiji Methodists ask God to reverse military commander's opposition to Reconciliation Bill

10:15 am on 20 July 2005

Members of Fiji's influential Methodist Church are reported to be praying for the military commander. Commodore Bainimarama, so that he changes his opposition to the government's Reconciliation and Unity Bill.

The general secretary of the church, the Rev Ame Tugauwe, has told Fiji TV that they are hoping God will work on Commodore Bainimarama to change his stance on the Bill.

The comments come as the church says it wants to facilitate talks between the prime minister, the military commander and President Iloilo on the Bill.

The Rev Tugauwe says the church is concerned at the breakdown in relations between Laisenia Qarase and Commodore Bainimarama.

He says they are hoping to invite both men to an open forum after church members around the country have made their views on the Bill known.

Meanwhile, another report says a senior church delegation which is visiting Vanua Levu has told circuit heads that the church supports the Reconciliation and Unity Bill.
