Fiji Senator says government is misleading indigenous fijians

8:34 pm on 20 July 2005

The senator for Fiji's Lau Province says the Qarase government is misleading indigenous Fijians in rural areas by giving them a false sense of security over the Reconciliation and Unity Bill.

Adi Koila Mara Nailatikau has told Radio Legend that a number of indigenous Fijians have supported the Bill just because its promoters have highlighted the Christian principles of reconciliation.

Adi Koila says she agrees with the military commander that the people are being told the Bill will strengthen Fijian power.

She says this view has been reinforced by a leaflet produced by senators Adi Litia Cakobau and Asesela Ravuvu, and businesswoman Mere Samisoni, which says indigenous Fijians must support the Bill because of ten points.

Adi Koila says the ten points have nothing to do with the Bill but are nationalistic aspirations directed against other races.

Adi Koila's father, the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara was deposed during the coup and she herself was kept hostage in parliament by George Speight's gunmen.

She is questioning why the government is still pushing ahead with the Bill when the victims of the coup want the law to take its course.
