Tuvalu tables groundbreaking leadership legislation

8:30 pm on 21 July 2005

Tuvalu has become the first Pacific country to table draft legislation for a leadership code.

The legislation is based on the Pacific Forum's Principles of Good Leadership and aims to encourage leaders to practise good governance.

If leaders fail in this, they may lose their jobs and be barred from contesting a vacancy in any leadership role in the country.

New institutions such as an ombudsman's commission and a leadership tribunal will be established to enforce the legislation.

The Legislative Governance Advisor for the Pacific Islands Forum, Mose Saitala, says other countries are to follow suit.

"There are a number of countries which have expressed a strong interest in developing their own leadership code, Kiribati is of course completing theirs, but there is also a strong interest from other countries like Nauru, Marshall Islands and lots of other countries."
