An American company is seeking approval from the Samoa Government to conduct crude oil and natural gas exploration in Samoa's waters.

The company is New York based Padre Valencia Energy Corporation.

The minister responsible for energy Faumuina Liuga told the Samoa Observer the proposal has been tabled in Cabinet and has been referred to the Attorney General's Office.

He said if there is oil and gas in Samoa and the company has money to explore it, it should be allowed to do so.

He expected the exploration deal to be signed by government by August.
