Fiji's ailing sugar industry is considering venturing in a radically new direction to survive.

The chairman of the Fiji Sugar Corporation, Ross McDonald, they are going into ethanol production.

The smallest of the company's four sugar mills at Penang in Rakiraki will be turned into a pilot plant for ethanol production.

Mr McDonald says if the trial is successful, the Fiji Sugar Corporation could one day become a producer of ethanol from sugar cane and electric power from bagasse, with sugar just a by-product.
