Striking PNG University students preventing others from attending classes

Striking students have reportedly prevented their colleagues from attending class at the University of Papua new Guinea in Port Moresby yesterday.

The National reports that at least one fight broke out but guards quickly stepped in before it got out of hand.

Police tried to detain some leaders of the strike and those believed to be involved in the torching of two vehicles last week but backed off when confronted by several students.

NCD/Central police commander Asst Comm Tony Wagambie said later that police would be out in force to help security personnel at the campus.

He appealed to them to remain calm and to return to classes.

Students have been protesting for over a week over the grading system and their dissatisfaction with senior staff.

Sources said some students were in classes in the morning when a "task force" went around telling them to leave while other protestors marched through the campus demanding Vice-Chancellor Prof Les Eastcott's resignation.

Students are due to meet the Higher Education Minister Brian Pulayasi to discuss their concerns on Monday.
