Forum satisfied at progress made by New Caledonia on autonomy deal

7:32 am on 23 July 2005

The Pacific Islands Forum says it's satisfied at the way New Caledonia is implementing the Noumea Accord on greater autonomy from France.

Fiji's foreign minister, Kaliopate Tavola, was part of a four-strong Forum delegation sent to New Caledonia to examine progress on the Accord.

Mr Tavola says he was struck by the visible engagement of New Caledonia and France in implementing the agreement.

The delegation confirms the Forum's strong support for the 1998 agreement, and says it's favourable towards New Caledonia playing a more active role on the regional stage.
