Solomons women see progress in getting political representation

1:29 pm on 27 July 2005

The National Council of Women in Solomon Islands says its national awareness programmes to lobby for more women in parliament are having an effect.

A former Prime Minister, Bartholomew Ulufa'alu, wants to get specific seats allocated to women.

Currently there are no women in parliament.

Council officer Sarah Dyer says although leadership roles in the Solomons are male-dominated, this is slowly changing.

"We're just keeping our fingers crossed and we hope that Solomon men realise and understand they do need us in the highest decision making body, and if we can have women in health, the education sector and the police...why not women up in parliament?"
