An outbreak of typhoid fever in Fiji has claimed its first victim.

The Daily Post reports that the number of confirmed typhoid cases is now 114, with 76 from the Northern Division and 37 in the Central/Eastern Division.

The confirmed cases have been reported from in and around Suva, the islands of Ovalau, Rabi and Koro, and several parts of Vanua Levu.

A medical team has been dispatched to the affected areas to contain the disease.

Meanwhile, Samoa has reported 19 confirmed cases of typhoid in June of this year.

There were 10 confirmed cases in May.

Medical staff say that the true numbers may be higher as not everybody with typhoid seeks treatment at the hospital.

The Public Health Division has launched a public awareness campaign to educate the public about the disease and how to protect their families.
