Britain is warning travellers to Fiji to stay away from any public gatherings there because the political situation is tense.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has reviewed its Fiji travel advisory, saying travellers "should avoid any demonstrations or gatherings of crowds in the streets".
In advice very similar to that recently issued by Australia, it says "the political situation in Fiji is tense as a result of a controversial Reconciliation, Tolerance and Unity Bill relating to the coup in 2000, which has been introduced to Parliament."
The Fiji Bill will set up a Commission to fast track amnesty for coup convicts like George Speight, erase their criminal records, give immunity to those not yet prosecuted and ask the courts to suspend proceedings against those facing charges.
