Nurses in Fiji walk off their job

12:20 pm on 4 August 2005

Nurses in Fiji walked off their jobs this morning.

The lightening strike by the nurses is in response to what they claim to be anomalies in their salaries and the proposed lay-off of 150 re-employed nurses

They are also demanding the correction of their salaries by their employer, Public Service Commission.

Affected is Suva's main hospital the Colonial War Memorial Hospital and hospitals in the west and northern districts of the country.

Labour Minister Kenneth Zinck and the general secretary of the Fiji Nurses Association Kuini Litua are currently in a meeting.

They had met earlier this morning in an attempt to avert the strike.

The nurses had filed the mandatory 28 day strike notice on Tuesday
