Fiji police increase security for terrorist attacks

7:11 am on 5 August 2005

Fiji police are on alert to monitor security around the British, Australian and United States diplomatic missions in Suva.

The Fiji Times reports that this follows comments by the Australian federal police commissioner, Mick Keelty, that up to 60 terrorists are already living in Australia in terrorist cells.

Security analysts say after the London bombings, terrorists are targetting Australia next.

Fiji's police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, says while they have not received any specific reports on international terrorist activity in the country, they are taking precautions.

Mr Hughes says the Special Branch is monitoring the situation and the security provided to the British, Australian and United States missions has been given high priority.
