The authorities in French Polynesia plan to relocate about 200 families who live near the international airport in Tahiti.
The plan follows concern that dozens of people live so close to the runway that it contravenes international airport regulations.
The housing minister, Gilles Tefaatau, says this is a priority and accommodation will be made available for those affected.
Mr Tefaatau says funds from the local government and the French state have been set aside to deal with the problem which has existed for twenty years.
The move is also aimed as aimed at eliminating substandard housing in the territory's most populous commune, Faa'a, which has been run by Oscar Temaru, the territory's new president.
