Fiji PM chides oppostion leader over coup remarks

5:53 pm on 10 August 2005

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has labelled as irresponsible remarks by the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, about another coup.

Radio Legend reports that speaking on its Hindi language sister station, Radio Sargam, Mr Chaudhry urged people not to be frightened of another coup if he is again elected prime minister after next year's general election.

Mr Chaudhry, who was removed from office in two coups in 1987 and 2000, told radio listeners people should stand for one policy in life and be ready to face the consequences.

But Mr Qarase says the issue of coups should not be brought up as it only creates fear and anxiety in the community.

Mr Qarase says it shows that Mr Chaudhry does not really care about what happens to Fiji.

He says this is not surprising because Mr Chaudhry has been on regular trips overseas trying to damage the image of the country and discredit his government.
