PNG governor Yali in rape trial

7:19 pm on 10 August 2005

The Governor of the Papua New Guinea province of Madang, James Yali, is facing a rape trial in the Waigani National Court.

The Post Courier reports that this follows the court's refusal to grant him leave to apply for a judicial review of the Madang District Court's decision to commit him to stand trial.

Mr Yali is on trial for three sexual offence charges relating to a teenage girl.
